Dr Fatuma Simba
Dr Fatuma Simba is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Information and Communication Technologies (CoICT). She received a PhD degree in 2012 on the research titled “Determination of Viable Connectivity Technology for e-Learning in Tanzania: Case Study of Rural Secondary Schools” awarded by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), Tanzania. She did a Master’s degree by thesis on “Implementation of Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP-based VPN) Connectivity in Tanzania” in 2005, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics Science and Communication, in 2001, both from the UDSM.
Dr Simba's research areas of interest include wireless broadband networks, e-Learning, cybersecurity and software development.
Teaching responsibilities
- Mobile Application Development,
- Object-Oriented Programming in Java,
- Principles of Operating Systems, and
- Telecommunication Switching Principles.
Research Projects
Dr Fatuma has been involved in the following selected research projects:
- “Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Economy through Commercialization of UDSM Engineering students Projects”. This project is funded by the Directorate of Research and Publication of the University of Dar es Salaam in 2019 -2021.
- Retooling Project for digital contents development of mathematics and science subjects for secondary schools funded by World Bank and Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) in 2014-2015.
Professional Services
Apart from teaching, research and professional services, Dr Simba is also interested in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She is involved in the following professional services and the activities:
- In 2021 (in progress), she is a member of task force to develop the University of Dar es salaam Innovation Centre.
- From 2017 to 2019, Dr Simba was a member of the task force formed by the UDSM to establish University-wide courses on Innovation and Entrepreneurship for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- From 2005 – 2006, she was a member of the Infrastructure Task Force in the Coordination Committee for ICT in Secondary Schools (e-Schools) under Tanzania Education Authority (TEA).
- She is currently a Coach at the University of Dar es Salaam ICT Incubator (UDICTI) which aims to nurture and provide the necessary support to University students and graduates with innovative ideas to turn them into start-up businesses.
- She is also involved in the SmartGirlz in ICT Capacity Building Programme. This is an outreach capacity building programme that aims to encourage and empower secondary school girls to consider studies and career in the growing field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). This programme is inspired by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)’s “Girls in ICT Day” initiative.
