BSc in Business Information Technology (BSc BIT)

Objectives and contents

This is a three-year full-time degree programme with the main objective of producing quality Business Information technologist graduates of high intellectual standard and calibre capable of devising, designing, developing and managing business IT systems to meet current and future computing needs in the business field both nationally and internationally. Specifically, the programme is designed:

  1. To equip students with fundamental and advanced concepts of business and IT with particular emphasis on the application of these concepts to further advance the state of information technology that meet the needs of intricate business applications.
  2. to provide students with expertise in the development and use of computer systems and quantitative modelling techniques for solving business problems and making managerial decisions.
  3. To equip students with hands-on experience in IT systems design and implementation in business environments.
  4. To impart effective business problem-solving skills.
  5. To train students in effective verbal and written communication skills.
  6. To impart key principles and skills to enable the students to practice as good and responsible business information technology professionals.
  7. To equip students with learning and research skills that integrate business issues, information challenges and technology.
  8. To equip students with the knowledge to develop innovative software systems that address business needs.
  9. To equip students with skills to be able to start and eventually manage their own businesses.

Graduate of BSc. in Business Information Technology will have acquired:

  1. Comprehensive understanding of business administration principles, information technology theories and practice using the most recent technologies, tools, applications and approaches in Business Information Technology fields.
  2. Comprehensive understanding of the challenges that constraints contemporary businesses and how Information Technology can be harnessed to tackle these challenges
  3. Skills to apply principles, theories and approaches for problem-solving in business fields.
  4. Skills to identify and analyze challenges facing effective business management
  5. Oral and written communication skills for effective business communications
  6. Skills to integrate blended business and IT competencies in devising business solutions.

Also, should be able to:

  1. Design and implement viable software-based business solutions.
  2. Evaluate existing business processes and redesign/ re-engineer for improvements.
  3. Analyze and document business requirements.
  4. Provide effective business management and innovation

Graduate from this programme may play different roles in business organisations such as:

  1. Business Analysts
  2. Information Systems Analysts
  3. Application Systems Designer
  4. Research Assistants 
  5. Help Desk Support
  6. Webmasters
  7. Information Systems Auditors 
  8. Systems Administrators 
  9. Trainers 
  10. Data Analysts

The UDSM minimum entry qualifications will apply with the following additional requirements:

Direct entry: two principal passes in the following subjects: Advanced Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Economics. In addition, applicants without Advanced Mathematics in their principal subjects must have a minimum of “C” grade in Mathematics at O-level.

Equivalent Entry Qualification: Appropriate equivalent Diploma or Full Technical Certificate (FTC) in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electronics or Telecommunication Engineering with an average of “B+” or a minimum GPA of 3.5 and must have a minimum of “D” grade in O-level Mathematics.

The school fee for this programme is TZS 1,500,000 for Tanzanian Nationals per year and USD 3,500 for Non-Tanzanian Nationals. The fee can be paid per academic year or by instalments per semester.
