Academic Programmes

PhD in Computer and IT Systems Engineering (PhD CITSE)

Objectives and contents

The PhD programme in Computer and IT Systems Engineering is a 3-year full-time programme provided by coursework and dissertation. It is a multi-disciplinary programme that builds an in-depth knowledge of the foundation principles of engineering. The discipline integrates the strengths of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Electronics Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering and Electrical Power Engineering in preparing students in pursuing career in academia, research or highly technical entrepreneurial innovation. The programme provides advanced knowledge and skills in all aspects of computer hardware, software, and their integration. Specifically, the programme is meant:

  1. To offer an outstanding and unique interdisciplinary PhD degree program that is research-based and builds upon the educational and research expertise and related areas.
  2. To impart students with theoretical background and applied knowledge in the fields of Computer and IT Systems Engineering aimed at enhancing their exceptional ability to undertake advanced original research.
  3. To enable students to acquire the ability to integrate information technology and computer system engineering using their broader knowledge in multidisciplinary contexts and be able to contribute to the advancement of the scientific body of knowledge in engineering and related fields.
  4. To equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills through problem-oriented research thus enabling them to spearhead multidisciplinary research encompassing computer and IT system engineering.
  5. To enable students, attain the capacity to develop innovative new ideas, methods and techniques in computer and IT system engineering that can stimulate developments in the industry.

Upon the completion of the PhD in Computer and IT Systems Engineering, graduates will be able to:

  1. Work across multiple disciplines to solve complex problems.
  2. Apply systems engineering approach to the development of computer-based information systems.
  3. Create new knowledge that focuses on national and local challenges while taking into consideration the local context and going beyond the current state-of-the-art solutions and existing business models.
  4. Create jobs through innovations and generate new knowledge by systematically integrating the knowledge triangle, i.e., education-research-innovation, at all education levels.
  5. Provide futuristic leadership in addressing societal challenges by using the challenge-driven Technology Transfer Alliance (TTA) model and Doctoral Training Centre concepts.
  6. Conduct in-depth research, both individually as well as in teams, in computer and information technology systems-related areas.

Graduate from this programme can work in research and higher learning institutions as researchers or academicians in computer and IT systems engineering. They can also venture into high-technical entrepreneurial innovations and designers of embedded systems.

To be eligible for admission into this programme, the student should satisfy the general University od Dar es Salaam minimum requirements for admission into a PhD programme. Additionally, applications should have a master's degree from institutions recognized by Tanzania Commision for Universities (TCU) in:

  1. Either Computer and IT Systems Engineering or any ICT related programmes
  2. Electrical Engineering-related Programmes with IT courses.
